Reflection 10 questions

To integrate map building into our classrooms, we would have them make a map of their neighborhood or surrounding community. They could see where each building is placed.

Also, we could make a map of important landmarks, like the White House, the Liberty Bell, among others. Students would be able to visually see where each of these important places are in relation to others

Video case analysis Will McConnell

1. A short summary of the video case: This video showed a fifth grade class working together through research and problem solving using computers to solve problems that they thought astronauts might have on space ships. They worked in groups and did research on computers to find how to solve math and physics type problems.
2. What technology was used in the video? The students used computers to do research and look up things they could not find the answers to.
3. The technology used in this lesson was teacher-centered (meaning the teacher, not the students, utilized the technology), or student-centered? Why? The technology in this video was very student centered because the students were using it to find the answers to their problems.
4. Do you agree that the technology makes the lesson more engaging? Why or why not? I believe that in this particular case technology did in fact make it more engaging. If computers were not available to the students to use then they would have to look up answers in books and references materials. I believe that this would have disinterested the students. There is something about using computers over books that engages the students more.
5. Think about what kind of preparations that teacher might need to make to implement this lesson. What would the teacher need to think about, both from a technological standpoint and a pedagogical standpoint? The teacher may have to search the web for appropriate pre-approved websites that the students could utilize in their search for information.
6. What strategies would you use to assess student performance in the video? I would use a quiz to see if the students learned what I wanted them to find out.
7. What are the advantages of using the technology in the lesson? Information is much easier to find (much more accessible).
8. What challenges would the teacher and students face when integrating the technology in learning and teaching? I don’t know

Alli, Reflection 6 Continued

Forgot to add the summary, oops...

This video is about how much tenchology is exposed to our students, ages eight to eighteen. However, many schools do not focus on technology, but rather learning english and proper language. And that schools focus too much on the fact that technology is informal language. It later talks about how now all media is being implemented into school district's curriculum. One lesson focuses on students analyzing media views of gender, for example.

Alli, Reflection 6

Technology used in video were computers and video cameras. The technology was student centered because is was about students using technology for research or projects. I agree that technology makes the lessons more engaging because technology has a way to captivate students better than pen and pencil do. Also, it always more variety for ways students learn compared to a text book. The teacher would have to make sure that she understands the technology being used, as well as how to help students use it. They would also need to make sure that it is relevant to the material needing to be covered, and related to the students learning. Strategies that I would use to assess students in the video is their engagement and participation, as well as their effort in the lesson. The advantages of using technology in the lesson is that it is much more hands-on learning and always an alternative way to teach. Challenges that the student and teacher would face when integrating the technology in learning and teaching would be to make sure that everyone understands not only the technology and how to use it, but the subject matter behind it.

Elyse, Reflection 6

I thought this video was interesting because students are engaged in real world projects. Two students are working on a graphic design project for software company. Students are working on computers with real time software and other graphic design software. They are using their other subjects like math and physics to help them create their design. The principal wants the students to demonstrate what they learn in class, this is a good and fun way for the students to show what they have learned. These projects challenge the students professionally and expose them to the business world. People think that schools need to find a way to use technology more throughout the school day.
The technology used in this video is very student-centered. It was the students who were on the computers developing the project. I think this is very good for the students because they are bringing together many subjects to demonstrate what they have learned in school.
I feel like all of the students are engaged in learning when they are using technology in the classroom. That is why I feel like teachers should use it. As a teacher I feel like it would be hard to keep all the students on task when they all have access to the internet at the same time. So I feel like there should be software on the computers that limits the websites that students can visit.

Betsy, Reflection 6

This video case was interesting because it was about a middle school integrating video and computer technology into the classroom to create a CD-ROM about the endangered species in Maine. Students used the internet to research the species, then took pictures and video-taped each of the species in its natural habitat. They digitally recorded the process of creating the CD-ROM. In music class, they recorded background music to be played on it.
The technology is student-centered because the students must use the internet, video cameras, and cameras to collect information for their final project. Also, they must use computer software to put the CD-ROM together.
I feel that putting together a CD-ROM makes the students more interested in the unit. Instead of reading about Maine’s endangered species, students were able to discover and learn for themselves. Students are engaged when they are interested in the topic; the technology creates a curiosity about the topic.
The teacher would have to think about this lesson from the pedagogical and technological standpoints. She needs to determine whether this lesson will teach the students about Maine’s endangered species and whether it will meet the standards. Also, she must determine whether the technology she would like to use will be too difficult for them. If it is, she must change her lesson.
To assess student performance, I would check the progress of their research and would watch their videos. By viewing their videos, I would be able to determine how in depth they have thought about the information.
One of the advantages to using technology in this lesson is that the students will learn how to use the internet to find information. Also, students will learn how to utilize video equipment. Technology creates another element to the learning process.
The teachers and students might have trouble accessing certain sites. Also, they might have trouble getting the technology to work. For example, the video camera might have difficulties.

I found this video case very interesting. The video covered the technology that a high school in Mississippi uses in science and math classes, and how the technology integrates the students' own personal interests and hobbies. Because the technology used involves the students and their favorite pasttimes, I feel that it would be easier to learn about physics and other difficult subjects since students are integrating their own interests.
The school uses many types of technologies, the most prominent probably being video cameras. The video cameras were used in physics classes to find rates of acceleration, etc. The school also uses laptop computers with probes, graphing calculators, GPS systems, and "e-clicks." the "e-clicks" are used in classrooms for trivia-type reviews and what is beneficial about these is that the teachers can go back and look at the answers the students give to see who is struggling and where. Then they can go back and review that specific topic so that the students are not left behind and confused.
The technology in this video was both teacher-centered as well as student-centered because both the teachers and students use them. The teachers use them for teaching purposes, as well as designing lessons for their students, and the students use them to evaluate different topics in various subjects.
I do agree that technology can make the lessons more engaging, however I also feel that integrating technology can sometimes be distracting to the students, as well as the teachers. It can be hindering to both the teacher and the student because sometimes it may be hard to see where students are struggling, and it can be hard for the student to figure out where he/she is falling behind.
In designing a lesson, the teacher has to think about the technology as well as the curriculum. The teacher would have to think about whether the integration of certain technology is at the correct level for the students. The teacher would also have to think about whether the technology is appropriate for the specific topic they are covering. Integrating certain technologies can be beneficial, but only if it coincides with the students' academic levels, as well as cooperating with the curriculum.
I would use technologies that have features where you can monitor your students' progress and understanding of the topics covered so that I would be able to see who is struggling and/or who needs more difficult material.
Advantages of using technology is that students become more familiar with different types of technologies, as well as different features of technologies that they already regularly use. It also prepares them for later on in life when they might have to use technologies daily, depending on their careers.
The challenges that teachers and students face are that sometimes the technology will not work. There could also be the instance when neither the teacher nor the student knows how to work the technology, which can cause problems in the lesson.

Will McConnell Reflection #5

www.brainpop.com
This website looked like the most interesting and fun site for kids to learn with. It uses videos and interactve games to help them learn the science concepts that are essential to developing young science minds. The videos are fun and entertaining, they use a man and his robot sidekick to tell the viewers how and when the science applies to certain situations.

http://kids.yahoo.com/science/index
This website is very similar to the first one in that it is geared for younger elementary students and is very interactive. the videos that the website has are very informative and fun to watch.

www.sciencedaily.com/videos
My final website is one that is less geared towards a younger audience, but is still very effective in reporting on science happenings around the country. Whats even better about the site is they use VIDEOS to show the reports. One example of a video the site had posted was about baseball's Coors field in Colorado, it was talking about why so many homeruns are hit in that particular stadium. They later go on to explain that it is because of the less dense air up in the rocky mountains. The site explains the science of the situation.....very interesting.

Thats all for now!!!! keep it real.

All of my sites have to do with Science:

http://www.brainpop.com/science/seeall/
This site is great because it has cartoon video clips about science. Also, the main site, brainpop.com, has a variety of subjects to choose from. This site would be extremely useful for teachers as a supplement to difficult science lessons. For instance, some of the free videos range from Kinetic Energy to Penguins. These videos will help students understand the material and will be enjoyable for them to watch.

http://heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/heasarc/videos/education.html
This site provides more information on astrophysical information. There are videos on Kepler's laws that would be beneficial for teachers to show to their classrooms. These would help reinforce the learning and understanding of the formulas by showing a visual representation.

http://dsc.discovery.com/beyond/?clik=www_nav_beyond
This site gives real footage about different science topics. Some show wildlife in its natural habitat while others demonstrate other forms of science, like physics. These videos would entrall students because they are real, therefore, they can relate to them.

I understand why finding effective video clips is important for my classroom. It will supplement my lessons and will give the students a different way of learning the material.

http://www.vpw.com/educational/results.asp?SEARCH=ELEM
This website is very cool. It shows you free videos that you can use in your classroom, and there are many topics covered (i.e. animals, eye care, volunteering, etc.). This is useful for teachers because if you are teaching about animals and you would like to use a video, this website offers a free video that you can use in your classroom during your lesson.

http://www.paducah.k12.ky.us/curriculum/early_childhood.htm
This website has links to an extended amount of educational videos for elementary and early education classes. There are many topics, and there is also a link to gain access to even more videos through the Murray State University Kentucky Academy of Technology Education main website. There are many videos for all subjects, and it is great for teachers to use if they don't have a video if they need one.

http://www.livewiremedia.com/VideosK-6.html
This website has a few choices about video-based curriculum that teachers can pick. The choices are not links to watch the videos, but they are links to view the product information so that, if desired, teachers can order the videos to use in their classes. These videos are offered in English and some in Spanish, which is good since many citizens have migrated from Mexico.

http://www.christiananswers.net/kids/vidclips.html this website has many video clips of animals. This is a good website for teachers to use because it is interactive for the children and there are lesson plans to help the teacher.

http://school.discovery.com/ontv/videoclips.html this website has a wide variety of video clips. You can choose the type of video you want to show by subject area. This website also has ideas for teachers about differnt teaching tools and lesson plans.

http://pbskids.org/curiousgeorge/video/ this website has educational videos about how kids learn about things. At the beginning of each clip there are drawings of Curious George. Students can play games while teachers can find good activities to use in the classroom.

Hey y'all!
The technologies that I use are my cell phone (it practically never leaves my ear...), my computer, the internet, my digital camera, and my iPod. Most other technologies are foreign to me.

I dont understand what a Blog is. I do, however, understand the e-portfolio. I enjoy playing around with the different formats.

I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend. I know Monday wont be an easy morning for all you football fans...

Hey guys! Pretty much the only technologies that I use are my cell phone, the internet, and a camera. When it comes to anything else I am not always the brightest.

I am really confused about this blog. I'm not really sure if I am doing this right. I will just have to look at oncourse to remember how to do the e-portfolio.

I hope everyone has a good weekend! Go Colts!!!

Hey everyone! I figured out how to invite people since Will didn't do anything except for create our blog haha. Anyway, I use technology every day, especially my cell phone, the internet (too much probably) and usually my camera.

I'm glad I finally figured out how to do this. It's so much easier than the frontpage program with our e-portfolio. I'm still struggling with that, but I'll figure it out I guess. I obviously have no idea what she wants us to write for this, since none of it is blending at all (ha), so I guess I'll just go.

See you guys next week! Have a good weekend! =)
